Background of the Study

Bilingual language switching is a dynamic cognitive process that involves the activation and inhibition of competing linguistic systems. In Nigerian adolescents, who often navigate between indigenous languages and global languages such as English, language switching is a frequent and essential skill. Neurocognitive markers, including ERP components and fMRI activation patterns, provide insights into the underlying processes that facilitate effective language switching (Umeh, 2023). This study assesses neurocognitive markers associated with bilingual language switching in Nigerian adolescents by employing tasks that require rapid alternation between languages. Measures such as reaction time, accuracy, and neuroimaging data will be collected to determine the efficiency of language control mechanisms. Understanding these markers will contribute to the development of cognitive models that explain bilingual language processing and inform interventions to enhance bilingual proficiency in educational settings (Adebayo, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

While bilingual language switching is recognized as a marker of cognitive flexibility, there is limited research on its neurocognitive basis among Nigerian adolescents. Existing studies often focus on adult populations, overlooking developmental aspects that affect language control mechanisms in youth. This gap hinders our understanding of how bilingual adolescents manage competing language systems and limits the development of targeted educational strategies to enhance cognitive control (Umeh, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To identify neurocognitive markers associated with language switching in Nigerian adolescents.

2. To assess the efficiency of language control during switching tasks.

3. To propose interventions to improve bilingual language switching skills.

Research Questions:

1. What neurocognitive markers characterize bilingual language switching in Nigerian adolescents?

2. How does switching efficiency relate to overall cognitive control?

3. What educational interventions can enhance language switching abilities?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it elucidates the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying bilingual language switching in Nigerian adolescents, informing cognitive and educational models that foster bilingual proficiency. The outcomes will support the development of targeted interventions to improve language control and academic performance (Umeh, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing neurocognitive markers in bilingual language switching among Nigerian adolescents using behavioral and neuroimaging techniques.

Definitions of Terms:

• Neurocognitive Markers: Neural indicators associated with cognitive processes.

• Language Switching: The process of alternating between languages during communication.

• Bilingual Adolescents: Young individuals fluent in two languages.
